Commemorative Stamps to Feature Geological Sites of Jeonbuk West Coast UNESCO Global Geopark

Buan-gun announced that, in collaboration with the Jeonbuk Regional Post Office, it will issue special commemorative stamps featuring Buan’s representative geological sites. The initiative aims to promote the natural landscapes and geological value of the Jeonbuk West Coast UNESCO Global Geopark.

A UNESCO Global Geopark is a system that preserves geologically significant heritage sites and manages them in connection with local sustainable development, including education and tourism. To maintain the Global Geopark brand, sites must pass a revalidation assessment every four years.

The “Jeonbuk West Coast UNESCO Global Geopark,” which received its initial designation in May 2023, is preparing for its first-ever revalidation next year. As part of this process, the geopark smoothly underwent an on-site evaluation by a UNESCO delegation this past May.

The newly issued commemorative stamps are designed to capture the diverse, four-season charms of the Jeonbuk West Coast Geopark’s premier geological landmarks, including Chaeseokgang Cliffs, Jeokbyeokgang Cliffs, and the Daewol Fold.

Buan-gun plans to use stamps—a familiar and accessible medium—to inform the general public about the purpose of the geopark system, while also leveraging them for domestic and international promotions. In particular, the county intends to maximize its global outreach by utilizing these commemorative stamps as official promotional items to introduce Buan’s geological heritage at international events, such as the biennial Global Geoparks Network (GGN) Conference.

A county official stated, “We find it deeply meaningful to issue stamps featuring Buan’s geological attractions at a time when this year’s UNESCO on-site evaluation has been successfully completed.” They added, “We hope these commemorative stamps will serve as an excellent promotional tool, not only within Korea but also for introducing Buan to the world at upcoming Global Geopark Conferences.”
